For Exporters Extending Credit to Overseas Buyers

Before you extend credit, know the company behind the order.

The Counterparty Intelligence & Credit Risk Report gives you a detailed, documented view of one overseas legal entity and one proposed trade transaction. We connect the company behind the order to the people, payment obligations, credit signals, adverse information and documentary protections that matter before you release the goods.

The Real Risk

A registry search tells you that a company exists. It does not tell you whether that company will owe you the money.

An overseas transaction can involve several different parties: the company shown on the website, the entity named on the purchase order, the party signing the contract, the consignee receiving the goods and the company expected to pay. That structure may be legitimate. But if it is not understood and documented before shipment, it can make a later invoice harder to enforce and a credit decision harder to defend.

This report is built around your proposed transaction — not around a generic company lookup. It helps you identify the correct legal entity, map the roles of the parties, assess available credit and adverse signals, and decide what should be clarified before you give payment terms or release the shipment.

One counterparty. One proposed transaction. One documented risk decision.
What the Report Covers

A detailed risk view built for the trade decision in front of you

The standard report combines transaction facts you provide with public-record, corporate, credit and adverse-information sources reasonably available for the jurisdiction and agreed scope. Where a licensed source is available, its third-party credit data is identified by provider and report date.

Legal Entity & Corporate Identity

We verify the overseas legal entity behind the order, including available registration details, legal form, current status, registered or operating address and other identifying information relevant to the transaction.

Ownership, Officers & Corporate Linkages

We review available officers, directors, parent/subsidiary relationships, related entities and corporate linkages that may affect the commercial risk of the proposed transaction.

Credit & Payment Signals

Where available through licensed business-data sources, we assess independently generated business credit scores, ratings, recommended credit limits and payment behaviour indicators. The report distinguishes provider data from Portage's own transaction analysis.

Financial, Legal & Adverse Information

We review financial indicators, insolvency or bankruptcy information, judgments, filings, liens, charges and other adverse events where they are legitimately available and relevant to the agreed scope.

Transaction-Role Map

We map who signs the contract, who places the order, who receives the goods, who is invoiced, who is expected to pay and who controls the payment instruction. We identify mismatches that should be resolved before shipment.

Red Flags & Trade Protection Plan

We convert findings into a clear red-flag register and practical commercial protections to consider: entity confirmations, authorised-signatory evidence, aligned transaction documents, payment protections and, where appropriate, specialist or local legal review.

The Deliverable

A detailed report your sales, finance and management teams can use

The final deliverable is not a database screenshot and not a one-page company summary. It is a structured Counterparty Intelligence & Credit Risk Report prepared for the transaction you are considering.

Report sectionWhat it gives you
Executive Risk DecisionThe identified entity, key facts, material red flags and a concise commercial position: proceed, proceed only with protections, or pause pending clarification.
Transaction ExposureA record of the proposed amount, currency, payment terms, goods or services, countries, Incoterms and expected credit exposure.
Entity & Corporate AnalysisLegal identity, available corporate structure, officers, linkages and discrepancies.
Credit & Financial SignalsAvailable third-party credit score, rating, recommended limit, payment behaviour and financial indicators — clearly dated and attributed.
Adverse-Information ReviewAvailable insolvency, judgment, filing, lien, charge and other adverse-event findings relevant to the scope.
Transaction-Role MapThe connection between contracting party, buyer, payer, consignee, delivery point and payment instruction.
Red-Flag RegisterEach material concern, its source, why it matters and what needs to be clarified.
Trade Protection RecommendationsPractical actions to consider before shipment or credit extension.
Source Log & LimitationsSource dates, scope boundaries and information that was unavailable or could not be confirmed.

We also walk you through the key findings, so the report becomes a trade decision — not a file that sits in an inbox.

The Output

You receive a commercial risk position, not vague "due diligence".

The report does not make the trade decision for you and does not guarantee payment. It gives you a documented basis for deciding what to clarify, what to change and what protection may be appropriate before the goods leave your control.

Commercial positionWhat it means
ProceedNo material issue was identified within the agreed scope that requires clarification before the proposed transaction. This is not a payment guarantee.
Proceed Only With ProtectionsThe transaction may proceed only after specific issues are resolved or defined protections are considered, such as confirmation of the liable entity, aligned documentation or revised payment terms.
Pause Pending ClarificationA material entity mismatch, adverse signal, missing information or transaction-structure issue needs to be clarified before goods are released or credit is extended.
When to Order

Use it before the moment your leverage leaves the warehouse

SituationWhy the report is relevant
A first order from a new overseas buyerConfirm who is actually behind the order before you establish credit exposure.
A larger order or longer payment term than usualTest whether the proposed exposure matches the information available about the counterparty.
Different companies appear across the PO, contract, shipping documents or payment instructionsUnderstand which entity is expected to pay and what needs to be documented.
The buyer changes entity, consignee, address or bank details shortly before shipmentPause and identify whether the change creates an unresolved risk.
Your insurer, finance team or management needs a documented approval fileProvide a structured evidence base for a material trade decision.

FAQ

Questions before you order

Is this a credit report?
It is more than a standalone credit report. The Counterparty Intelligence & Credit Risk Report combines available public-record, corporate, credit, payment, adverse-information and transaction-role findings into a risk assessment for your specific proposed trade transaction. A third-party credit report may form one component where it is legitimately available.
Is the credit score your own score?
No. Where a score is available, it is an independently generated business credit score from the identified licensed data provider. The provider and report date are stated in the report. Portage does not present third-party scores as its own model.
Does every report include the same data?
The report follows the same analytical structure, but source depth and availability vary by country, entity type and permitted source access. Before work begins, we confirm the available scope and any material limitation or third-party source cost.
Can you tell me whether I should give the buyer credit?
We provide the documented risk information and commercial protections relevant to the proposed transaction. The decision to extend credit, the credit limit and the final payment terms remain yours.
Does a positive report mean the buyer is guaranteed to pay?
No. The report is a commercial risk assessment, not a payment guarantee, insurance decision or recommendation to extend credit. It helps you understand the information available at a point in time and decide what terms and protections may be appropriate.
What if the contracting party, payer and consignee are different companies?
That structure can be commercially legitimate, but it should be documented clearly. The report maps the parties and identifies the questions or confirmations that should be resolved before you ship or extend credit.
Can you check any country?
We can discuss the proposed jurisdiction, but the depth of public and commercial information varies by country. We confirm what can reasonably be covered before paid work begins.
Are you a law firm?
No. Portage is a commercial risk and debt-recovery agency, not a law firm. Where jurisdiction-specific legal advice, contract drafting or proceedings are required, they are provided only by independently licensed local counsel under separately agreed terms.
How is the scope confirmed?
The scope is confirmed privately after we understand the entity, transaction structure, jurisdictions and information available. Before any work begins, we set out the deliverables, scope boundaries, material limitations and engagement terms in writing.
